![]() ![]() Or not even play too much into the action at all – to the point where you forget a character has green hair until it’s mentioned again. Something I’ve noticed, is that the magical elements don’t necessarily overpower a character’s humanity and limits – they tend to function just as any other character trait might, a double edged sword that can make things easier for a character, or just as easily trip them up. ![]() The key to magical realism is acknowledging the extraordinary as completely ordinary, allowing supernatural elements to reside right alongside the mundane, nitty-gritty details of life. Along with Allende, the genre is characterized by other Latin American Writers, such as Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Jorge Luis Borges, and Toni Morrison. ![]() The genre of magical realism, of which Allende is considered one the pioneers, is absolutely the genre you’ve been waiting for your entire life. My inspiration for delving into the world of magical realism came, admittedly, less from wanting to read a great classic, and more because I was looking for that post-Jane the Virgin fix and wanting to get in on some of that magical realism action like Jane’s characters talking to her, or flowers flying up in the air to tell her she’s found her true love (what writer could resist that?). ![]()
